  • Just a 5 minute drive from Pai center is a small Long Neck Karen (Kayan) village of fewer than 20 residents. Visitors pay a small entry fee (price TBC) and are welcomed to walk through the community space where the women live, weave, and create their handicrafts. You’ll find hand-woven scarves, natural textiles, carved decorations, and other handmade items, all crafted with skill and care.

    Many foreign visitors arrive with concerns or misconceptions about the ethics of visiting Long Neck communities. It’s important to understand that the Kayan people are not indigenous to Thailand. They are refugees who have crossed the jungle to escape the conflict in Myanmar, and because their legal work opportunities as refugees are extremely limited, tourism is one of the few ways they can earn a safe and stable livelihood.

    The women are not forced to wear the traditional brass coils; many choose to continue this tradition because it is part of their identity, heritage, and sense of pride. They welcome visitors who come with respect and genuine curiosity. This small village is a safe community where the women can maintain their cultural traditions while supporting themselves through their craft.

    If you choose to visit, the most ethical way to support the community is to purchase handicrafts directly from them, ensuring your contribution goes straight to the families who rely on it.
